Continuing our theme of the power of the Most Holy Rosary, we bring you a most incredible story about how simply holding the rosary saved the life of a college girl. 

The infamous, demon-possessed, serial killer Ted Bundy had lured and killed dozens of young adult women in the Northwest US- in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Colorado. The detectives had scant evidence to tie all of the murders to Bundy, however, he had been captured and tried for several of them. Unbelievably, the charismatic sociopath was able to escape prison two times, the second time, crawling through a ceiling crawlspace at night during the Christmas holidays, dressing in the warden’s clothes and walking out. He stole a car which broke down, then he hitchhiked to the nearest town, caught a bus to the airport and flew to Chicago all before it was discovered that he had escaped. 

The story of this handsome man begins with an unwed mother, a violent grandfather, and pornography. Several witnesses to the life of Bundy describe his face changing into something extremely frightening, and he himself described a “sickness which would come over him.” 

Those of us familiar with fasting and the reasons behind why we fast recognize the portals for the demonic to enter a life: fascination with the demonic, trauma, pornography, drugs, watching horror movies, etc. On the other hand, we recognize the power that this scriptural meditation holds over the proudest of proud fallen angels. The devil and his minions loathe Mary’s acceptance of the will of God at the moment of the Annunciation and every moment of her life after that, despite the pain it would cost her. Because of her humble submission, the demise of demons’ power over man will never be the same.

Bundy, who thrilled at murder, torture and rape, flew down South and continued to find victims in Florida. Shortly before he was captured, he stealthily entered a sorority house and bludgeoned two women, killing them, and severely injuring two others. Bundy then entered the room of another girl, intent to kill her as well. This girl however had the rosary in her hand when Bundy entered. Why did Bundy uncharacteristically spare this this girl? He later testified that an unseen force repelled him. 

As our Savior tells us John 10:10, evil comes to kill and destroy.

Believers, realize evil does not back down when confronted with reason. You cannot persuade evil with eloquence. Evil as seen through the ages and as taught in Obama’s cornerstone piece, Rules for Radicals, aggressively argues, launches a different accusation, lies and when in trouble screams racism to deflect the realization as to how wrong evil is. Evil simply relaunches a different attack.

Evil only succumbs to …. power.

The girl who was spared Bundy’s evil related that she had been taught the example of the power of the biblical meditation that is the rosary by her grandmother. Her grandmother encouraged her to pray the rosary daily even if she fell asleep while doing so with it in her hand.

The rosary is not a good luck charm. When used, it is a symbol to evil that resonates across the principalities signaling that power is with the believer. One of the most frequently recited prayers in the world, no formal prayer calls more upon the holy name of Jesus, verbally praising our savior 53 times when a rosary is prayed – It is little wonder evil retreats when confronted with the rosary. It is as some of history’s most luminous believers have stated repeatedly, a “weapon” in the spiritual battle.  It is a good and pious practice to carry a rosary in one’s pocket or purse, to hang it from the rearview mirror of a car, or to place it on doorknobs around the house, witnessing to others that you are a follower of Jesus and warning evil to keep its distance.

Dominicans who follow in the great tradition of St Dominic to whom the rosary was given by our Blessed Mother, carry the weapon dangling from their belt in the place where a sword would be. The more of us who unleash this weapon, the better for our families, our culture, and our country.
