The Perth Mint began minting the Gold Kangaroo series in 1986. It was originally known as the Gold Nugget series and featured various gold nugget images on the reverse. In 1989, the design underwent a transformation to showcase the kangaroo, highlighting this unique Australian wildlife. These coins are minted in various denominations, including 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 1 oz, and 1 kilo sizes, and they hold legal tender status in Australia.
