Every Wednesday and Friday when we fast, we are engaging in the spiritual battle. Although we are unable to see beyond the veil most of the time, we know that God created not only this material world, but invisible intelligent beings as well-angels.  In his letter to the Colossians, verse 1:16, St Paul writes, “for in Him were all things created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether Thrones, or Powers, or Principalities, or Dominions.

For many people, these words are merely poetic, but Thrones, Powers, Principalities, and Dominions are actually ranks of angels as further study of the Scriptures reveals. Furthermore, the Book of Revelation tells us that approximately a third of the angels participated in a rebellion led by Lucifer and were kicked out of heaven. In their hatred of God, these demons are, and have always been, engaged in trying to thwart Him at every turn and entice His beloved children, through the use of their free will, to choose an enticing but deadly path set with snares.

It will be useful for us to study the ranks of angels (and the demons who fell out of those ranks), so that we can better understand what our spiritual father Paul (I Cor 4:15) is referring to in his writings. Paul described a mystical experience in which a man (we assume he is referencing himself) saw into “the third heaven,” so we believe that much of what he writes is borne of that profound experience. 

According to various Church Fathers, St Thomas Aquinas, and others who have poured over the scriptures, there are three divisions of angels. We will deal only with the first division today, The first division of angels has three ranks: the Seraphim, the Cherabim, and the Thrones. 

The Seraphim are particularly described in the OT book of Isaiah in the prophet’s vision of the throne room of God. These angels have three sets of wings: one covering their faces, one covering their feet, and one holding them aloft. Their job is literally to adore God with their ardent love 24/7/365/eternity. Their celestial exclamations “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God of Hosts! Heaven and earth are filled with your glory!” are also said during the mass just prior to the priest calling down the Holy Spirit. Lukewarm Christians would do well to ask for the Seraphim to help us love God more and more until our hearts are aflame with love of God. 

The Cherubim are the second rank and are noted for their fullness of knowledge. In Genesis, one of the Cherubim is set at the entrance to the Garden of Eden with a flaming sword to ensure that humanity cannot reenter the garden. Aquinas makes the case that Lucifer came from this rank. Lastly, the Thrones are the third rank in the first division. They are powerful and grant access to the throne room of God.  

The more we delve into the invisible world, angels and demons, the more we will see with the eyes of faith. So when we do battle with our fasting, we have a better understanding of our own role in the spiritual battle. One thing that we should never, never do is simply watch from the sidelines. Engage, soldier!

This was told to the world in 1984 for the occasion of Mary's 2000th birthday with the promise that if the world prayed and fasted the three days leading up to that celebration, tremendous miracles would be poured out on that occasion. Why We Fast – Our Core Fasting Intentions

1) We add the new fasting intention of taking back the church from evil. We submit the three-step process to achieve this victory is 1-Repent, 2-Prayer & Fasting and, 3-Imitate our Savior by throwing the evil leadership from the church. We will seek to emulate the Savior in our effort to End The USCCB, an organization that has been devastating to the church.  (“You shall know the spirit by the fruits” - Matt. 7:16)

2) For the Holy Spirit to reign down upon America, renewing our land as the Christian, capitalist meritocracy we were founded to be.

3) For the protection of our police, firefighters, military and their families from harm and that the Lord bless their courageous generosity on our behalf.

4) For the protection of the families who fast with us, and for God’s blessings of abundance upon them and that true to His word, we will be able to witness that He prospered us in famine.

5) For priests, ministers and all who aspire to lead others to the Lord, that the Holy Spirit will reign down upon them as at Pentecost filling them to overflowing. 

6) For the Americans jailed after January 6th who were admitted to the Capitol building by the police, and who were not found to have destroyed any property at the capitol yet who have been held captive ever since on our own soil - That God's Spirit will move quickly to bring justice back to this land and free them.
