And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. - Mark 4:39
“Peace, I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” - John 14:27
The worldly definition of peace is simply the absence of war, however the word has a much richer meaning in the spiritual realm.
When Paul wrote his letter to the church in Philippi, he outlined the secret of obtaining this lasting peace that Jesus has made available to us:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).
Getting to this place of peace won’t come from worry or stress. It will come from resting in the loving arms of your savior. Knowing that he is in control and that he will carry you through any situation that life has to offer. What Jesus said to his disciples still rings true today, he will love you to the end. When you let that sink into your spirit and this reality becomes true to you, there is only one by product of this: peace. This truly is a peace that no one in the world could ever give you.
And in the Bible, the word peace can refer to the absence of conflict, but it also points to the presence of something better in its place. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word for peace is shalom, and in the New Testament, the Greek word is Eirene. The most basic meaning of shalom is complete or whole, absence of conflict, and the word Eirene is associated with a state of blessing and prosperity.
How does God give us peace? We begin our experience of eternal peace through reconciliation with God in Christ, and we deepen this state of grace as we receive the gift of His Holy Spirit. Because of the Spirit, we enjoy the blessing of peace in our daily lives—even when we find ourselves in the midst of turmoil.
How many times did Jesus say peace?
After His death and resurrection, Jesus used this greeting three times when He met with His disciples (John 20:19-29). It is interesting to note that Jesus only used this greeting of peace after His resurrection. He did not use this greeting before His resurrection.
A necessary step to acquire and maintain peace of heart is to comprehend our dependency on God. “Apart from Me You can do nothing “ (John 15:5). St. Therese of Lisieux, the little flower, stated that the best thing that God could have done in her soul was “to have shown her her smallness, her powerlessness.”
In order that we may lead our lives doing the work of the Lord, it is important to acquire and maintain an interior peace, the peace of our hearts. An analogy would be a glass lake. Our hearts can exude the love of God when Peace reigns in our heart just as a still lake can reflect the sun’s rays on a still day. Saint Seraphim of Sarvow said “Acquire interior peace and a multitude will find its salvation through you”.
For those of us who have loved ones fallen away, rest assured that they do not know peace, as St. Augustine said “You made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” We can rest in the hope that our loved ones will strive for peace of heart and will eventually find it in a Yes to God. The Lord will trouble and disquiet their consciences with the goal of repentance and conversion.
Ww conclude with the necessary condition for interior peace, goodwill, also considered purity of heart. Imperfection is inevitable but our desire to love God, to please Him and to do His will, negating all that is contrary to Him is what goodwill consists of and is a prerequisite for peace of the soul. As the angels announced at the birth of our Savior,
“peace on earth to men of goodwill”
Goodwill is sufficient to render us agreeable to God and therefore be at Peace. May the Peace of the Lord Be with you Today and Always!
