Why Does Media Bother To Slander The Rosary?
____________________________________________________________________________ Believers,
We have always maintained that the rosary is a weapon, so we are intrigued that the recent article in the Atlantic demonstrates real concern about the power that we have in our little knotted ropes. Although the author’s intention, it would appear, would be to vilify and marginalize rosary praying Christians and to spread irrational fear (much like the Hutu did to the Tutsis and the Nazis to the Jews), God can use it for great good! The words of Joseph (in Genesis) come to mind when he spoke to his brothers. Joseph had been miraculously elevated from a slave in prison to the most powerful position in the land, and when his brothers, who had sold him into slavery, realized who he was, they were justifiably afraid of reprisal. He said in Gen 50:20, “Even though you meant harm to me, God meant it for good, to achieve His present end, the survival of many people.” So, we welcome the attack and greater attention to the very real threat to evil that the rosary poses. It indeed does have great power in the physical as well as the spiritual realm.
The ancient prayer is said to have been given to St Dominic by Christ’s mother herself in a vision over a thousand years ago as a means to defeat the Albigensian heresy. This new belief had inflicted civil war and untold social miseries with its devout but perverse interpretation of the faith. The Albigensians thought that man had a dual nature and that spirit was good but that the flesh was evil; consequently, marriage and procreating was not a good thing, and suicide was not a bad thing. Sound familiar to our day? Meditation on the mysteries of Christ’s life, then, deeply instructs the petitioner on the life of God incarnate- that spirit and flesh are both good because God Himself took on flesh.
The rosary is not only capable of converting people intellectually, but it has also brought about physical victory through faithful prayer by throngs of people on the brink of defeat in war. The Battle of Lepanto in the 1500s saw the Holy League vastly out numbered by the Mohammedans, and all of Christian Europe was in danger of being overrun. The Pope at the time, Pope Pius V, a Dominican himself, implored all the people of Europe to pray the rosary. Against all odds, the greater islamic force was defeated by the much smaller Christian force, and the Pope was given a vision of the victory before he even received the news. Since that year, October 7th has been celebrated every year as the Feast of Our Lady of Victory.
The story of the Philippines in 1986 is another example of the power of the rosary. Ferdinand Marcos had won a fraudulent election against Corazon Aquino, the widow of one of Marcos’ critics who had been assassinated. The people refused to accept the result, and martial law was enacted to quell civil unrest. The situation was very grim but the people picked up the rosary in a massive wave. Inexplicably, the tension faded, Marcos went into exile, and Aquino became president. There are many other historical examples of victory out of certain defeat when the faithful pick up the rosary.
So, Atlantic Monthly, we see your twisted game. We may be persecuted because of our faith, but we welcome that, because Christ told us “Blessed are those who are persecuted for My sake.” The fact is that we can enlist rosary praying soldiers of any age, of fantastic or debilitated physical condition, of great or little faith, anytime of the day or night, and we don’t even need our rosaries! We can pray on our fingers, and it makes us smile because there is nothing you can do about it. We can fast and you can’t do anything about that either. We have you in our spiritual crosshairs! ____________________________________________________________________________ |
