Obverse :  The front of the coin features a portrait of Paul Kruger, the former President of the South African Republic (also known as the Transvaal), who played a significant role in South Africa's history. This image was designed by artist Otto Schultz and has been used in various iterations of the coin since its introduction.

Reverse :  The reverse side of the coin depicts a springbok antelope, the national animal of South Africa. The springbok is depicted in mid-leap, symbolizing freedom, and grace. Above the antelope is the inscription 'South Africa' (in both English and Afrikaans), and the year of minting is also noted.
