Hey Dear Protestant brother, did you realize the roots of confession stem from the Old Testament? Jews would confess their sins and then place their sins on the lamb that would be sacrificed.
Dear Catholic brothers and sisters, did you realize that in the new testament, the Lord commands us to specifically confess our sins to one another and not just to the Lord in the silence of our hearts?
Therefore confess your sins to each other - James 5:16
Let us not also forget the words of our Savior, as unfair as they may seem to you, where He gave authority to his apostles, aka His first priests, to forgive sins. He also gave those same priests the power to choose not forgive sins of believers. Notice He did not give that authority to everyone in attendance at His sermons – he specifically gave it to His priests…
“Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven: if you retain the sins of any, they are retained” (John 20: 21-23)
Consider the awesome example of forgiveness seen in what is likely the first publicly recorded confession in history. In 2 Samuel 12 David confesses his sin, and literally in the same verse as his confession, God gives David absolution. It is clear that it was David’s willingness to confess and repent that endeared David to the Lord and is why David was the only person in scripture that God said had a heart like the Lord’s.
David’s story shows that even after forgiveness, sin has consequences though. So to say the least, it is in our interest in this life as well as the next to avoid sin and the ramifications that sin has on us.
While our Protestant brothers are in disagreement about the reality of purgatory despite the numerous phenomena that point to this extension of David’s reality, what has been made clear is there is great news about purgatory. First, despite being like what Good Friday was for Jesus, we will choose to go to purgatory when we see ourselves as God sees us. It will be voluntarily. Secondly in His mercy the flames of purgatory are quieted on Sundays in honor of the Sabbath. Perhaps most notably, with voluntary reparation one can alleviate if not remove the consequences of sin upon death – i.e. if we voluntarily atone for our sins now, the cost is a lot lighter than waiting to atone for those same sins in purgatory.
How to do so? Incremental Fasting, penances including the sacrament of Penance itself, aka confession. Perhaps the best way to do so? Consider also these words from the fifth chapter of James:
My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back,20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins. - James 5:19-20
Notice the reward for us to turn others from sin is not just eternal life. It is eternal life AND remediation for our sins. This is a New Testament writing after Christ had died and risen. So perhaps we should consider there is indeed an urgency to atone for our sins as believers in this life?
Scripture is clear - Sin blinds
We become oblivious to reality, and we deny its implications. Confession which is so resisted by believers of all flavors is an irreplaceable step to recovering lost grace and seeing truth.
Here is a video on confession. In it Rev. Jonathan Meyer talks about what to do if you haven’t been to confession in years, holding the priest accountable to the highest standards of the confession, and recognizing that the socialist justice focus of the dangers of being judgmental pale in comparison to sins against the Lord, such as taking his name in vain …
1) We add the new fasting intention of taking back the church from evil. We submit the three-step process to achieve this victory is 1-Repent, 2-Prayer & Fasting and, 3-Imitate our Savior by throwing the evil leadership from the church. We will seek to emulate the Savior in our effort to End The USCCB, an organization that has been devastating to the church. (“You shall know the spirit by the fruits” - Matt. 7:16)
2) For the Holy Spirit to reign down upon America, renewing our land as the Christian, capitalist meritocracy we were founded to be.
3) For the protection of our police, firefighters, military and their families from harm and that the Lord bless their courageous generosity on our behalf.
4) For the protection of the families who fast with us, and for God’s blessings of abundance upon them and that true to His word, we will be able to witness that He prospered us in famine.

We maintain a repository of ideas and information we have learned over the last decade while fasting weekly for America. From scientific studies on the benefits of fasting, to the differences between intermittent dieting vs intermittent fasting, to scriptural references regarding the power of fasting to the history of first century Christians who stated believers are obligated to fast weekly, we hope you will find numerous insights with our free resource located here.
Together let us also implore Heaven while fasting for intentions you have highlighted:
4) For all patriots who put themselves on the front lines in combatting evil and for all of the warriors who are stepping up around the nation to fight for the gospel – May The Father cover them in the blood of our savior, protect them and their families from evil and bring victory to their endeavors.
5) For priests, ministers and all who aspire to lead others to the Lord, that the Holy Spirit will reign down upon them as at Pentecost filling them to overflowing.
6) For the Americans jailed after January 6th who were admitted to the Capitol building by the police, and who were not found to have destroyed any property at the capitol yet who have been held captive ever since on our own soil - That God's Spirit will move quickly to bring justice back to this land and free them.
