Hey Christian - Is Your Child Also Your god?
"In prayer you shall perceive ... the way out of every situation that has no exit." |
____________________________________________________________________________ Years ago we heard of an unorthodox conversion story in a New York City cab. The speaker was a highly successful entrepreneur who had just piled into his cab when he immediately noticed the cabbie was listening to a sermon by a Baptist minister. The entrepreneur was already a committed Christian so when he heard the Baptist minister ask the question: “Hey Christian who is your God?” he answered to himself “That’s easy - Jesus!“
As the entrepreneur road down Madison Ave and the radio broadcast continued, a second time the Baptist minister asked the same question over the radio waves, this time emphasizing his words more deliberately:
“Hey Christian I’m talking to you…
Who-is-your-god?"
A second time the entrepreneur thought to himself: “I said already Jesus. Everybody in the church knows that. Why is he asking this?“
Then a third time the Baptist minister asked the same question, this time shouting across the radio waves with all of the intensity he could muster:
“No Christian! I’m not talking to somebody else! I’m talking to YOU!
HEY CHRISTIAN! WHO …. IS …… YOUR …. GOD?”
“What is this guy talking about,” The highly successful, born-again entrepreneur asked himself. Then the Baptist minister delivered a knockout blow.
“Whatever you spend most of your time praying for Christian … THAT is your God.“
The entrepreneur was immediately convicted of his sin … and when he retold the story of his experience that day … so were we.
The entrepreneur realized he prayed much more for his own children and for his success in business than he did for conversions and God‘s kingdom. Just like the entrepreneur, we too were convicted we prayed too much for other things, and not enough for the kingdom.
On Monday, the most studied gospel passage in the world was from Matthew 10.
37 He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me
Is working on the sabbath a god to us? Do we put our desire to earn money or our desire to fix or clean around the house on Sundays above scripture’s command not to work on the sabbath?
Or are our children gods to us as Jesus warned about? Do we spend more time praying for children, or loved ones than we do praying for some aspect of the kingdom?
Or perhaps we spend more time praying about money ... than for the kingdom?
Come Holy Spirit, help us to see ourselves as You see us.
And then Spirit help us recognize when we commit greatest sin of all - having false gods in our lives, be they pagan gods that we support so widely in America today, be it causes entangled with malicious “love”, be it money… or our children. Then Spirit help us to root out those idols from our lives.
No other repentance in our lives will make heaven more pleased than fixing this, the first and most important commandment God gave to Moses. It was what Jesus said was the most important commandment: Love God with all of our heart and might – Love Him above all else.
Thank you for fasting with us today – there will be holy envy in heaven that you made the effort to fast on July 19, 2023. Why We Fast – Our Core Fasting Intentions 1) We add the new fasting intention of taking back the church from evil. We submit the three-step process to achieve this victory is 1-Repent, 2-Prayer & Fasting and, 3-Imitate our Savior by throwing the evil leadership from the church. We will seek to emulate the Savior in our effort to End The USCCB, an organization that has been devastating to the church. (“You shall know the spirit by the fruits” - Matt. 7:16) 2) For the Holy Spirit to reign down upon America, renewing our land as the Christian, capitalist meritocracy we were founded to be. 3) For the protection of our police, firefighters, military and their families from harm and that the Lord bless their courageous generosity on our behalf. 4) For the protection of the families who fast with us, and for God’s blessings of abundance upon them and that true to His word, we will be able to witness that He prospered us in famine. 4) For all patriots who put themselves on the front lines in combatting evil and for all of the warriors who are stepping up around the nation to fight for the gospel – May The Father cover them in the blood of our savior, protect them and their families from evil and bring victory to their endeavors.
